A Haven village for a neighbourhood in Nanaimo.

Where do you find a mom group in Nanaimo?

Start with Island Health's public-health drop-ins, the Nanaimo public library's baby and toddler storytime, and your local recreation centre's parent-and-tot programmes. All are free and organized by catchment, so everyone there lives nearby.

Haven adds verified neighbourhood villages across Departure Bay, Old City, North Nanaimo, Chase River, Harewood and Cedar — opening after the first beta communities of the Greater Toronto Area.

What's already available in Nanaimo

  • Island Health public-health units — postpartum drop-ins, feeding support and new-parent groups, free and staffed by nurses.
  • Public libraries — baby and toddler storytime, weekly and free. The most under-used parent network there is.
  • Recreation centres — parent-and-tot swimming, gym time and classes.
  • Community and neighbourhood houses — family drop-ins and programmes, often with childminding.

These are the first places to try, and none of them require an app.

Where Haven fits

Haven is for the part those programmes cannot cover: the Tuesday afternoon when you need someone to collect your older child, or the week when leaving the house is the hard part.

Neighbourhoods opening first

Villages are being formed around Departure Bay, Old City, North Nanaimo, Chase River, Harewood and Cedar. Each village has a name, a neighbourhood, guidelines its members agreed to, and admins who moderate.
